Play exploring friendship of Lewis and Tolkien comes to Erskine March 3
“Lewis & Tolkien, of Wardrobes & Rings,” by British actor and playwright David Payne, will be performed Friday, March 3, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. in Lesesne Auditorium on the Erskine College campus.
The play is set in Oxford’s Eagle and Child pub, where British authors C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, Oxford University professors and members of a literary group known as the Inklings, meet for what turns out to be their final conversation.
Lewis is known today for his fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia, as well as for Mere Christianity, a work of apologetics. Tolkien is best known for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, fantasy works which have been adapted for the screen.
Payne, who stars as C.S. Lewis in the play, delighted Erskine audiences last year with his performance of “An Evening with C.S. Lewis,” his one-man show.
