Arts events set for spring semester
This spring, the Erskine College Department of Music will welcome guest artists, spotlight student performances, and sponsor a two-day opera workshop, and the Bowie Arts Center will host two student exhibits.
The Coda Guitar Duo, a classical guitar duet based in Columbia, starts off the season with a performance Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
“Coda” guitarists Brett Floyd and Christopher Jenkins have played in numerous venues, including the Candlelight Concert Series at Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, Va., and concert series at George Mason University, Indiana State University, and the Rosario Guitar Festival. The Coda Guitar Duo won first place at the Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival and Competition in May 2010.
Pianist EunMi Ko will offer a concert Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., also in Memorial Hall.
A student at Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y., she has appeared for the past four years in more than 10 concerts annually as soloist and collaborative pianist throughout the United States and in Korea.
Student musicians will take the stage in a number of afternoon and evening recitals throughout the semester. Individual performers will include Justin Boazman, Rebecca King, Aimeé Dumouchel, Kensey McCroskey, Elizabeth DeVault and Jennifer Shafer.
An evening with Erskine’s instrumental ensemble, Sinfonia, directed by Dr. Brooks Kuykendall, and the Erskine Chamber Singers, directed by Professor Bill Diekhoff, is planned for Saturday, April 9, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
The Erskine Choraleers, also directed by Diehkoff, will headline the Spring Choral Concert Friday, April 29, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
Professor Lucie Svatonova, who directed last year’s opera at Erskine, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, is conducting an opera workshop this spring. “This spring’s opera workshop production will consist of several scenes from operas by Mozart, namely The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro,” she said. “It will be a staged and costumed production with piano accompaniment.”
Svatonova expects about 10 students to participate in the workshop, with performances in Memorial Hall planned for Friday, April 8, at 8 pm. and Saturday, April 9, at 3 p.m.
Erskine’s annual Open Call Student Art Show, an exhibit of works by Erskine students, regardless of major, opens March 14 in the Bowie Arts Center.
The Erskine College Senior Art Major Show starts April 15 with an opening reception scheduled for 6-8 p.m. in the Bowie Arts Center. Artists displaying their works include seniors Mary Alex Senn, Hannah Oates, Octavia Williams, Kennedy Craig, Ashley Garrison, Jean-Marie Harris and Patrick Wilson.
