Winter Term 2013 begins this week
Whether exploring fictional monsters and what they can teach us about being human with Associate Professor of Music Dr. Brooks Kuykendall, learning the basics of personal financial planning with Assistant Professor of Business Administration Karen Mattison, or gaining hands-on experience in horsemanship with alumna Harriet Brawley Morton, Erskine students who return to Due West for Winter Term this week take the opportunity to zoom in on just one class for the month of January.
Meanwhile, two Winter Term classes will convene off campus—way off campus.
This year’s international option is “From the Great Wall to the South China Sea: Erskine in the Far East-2013,” taught by McDonald-Boswell Professor of History Dr. David Grier and Professor of History Dr. Sandra Chaney, a husband-and-wife team who will take a group of students to China, where they spent a recent sabbatical.
Also intriguing is a trek to be led by Dr. Mary Lang Edwards, professor of biology, and Dr. Naoma Nelsen, assistant professor of biology. Students who sign up for “Marine Biology at Pigeon Key” might feel as if they are in another country, if not another world, as they study marine habitats, conservation, and more in a protected area of the fabled Florida Keys. They will also spend time in the Florida Everglades.
More than 20 additional courses round out the Winter Term mix, including “Japanese Culture and Traditions” with Dr. Ekaterina Michonova-Alexova; “Hawaiian History (1798-1898) with Dr. Russ Benton; “Research Techniques in Art Therapy” with Dr. Robert Elsner; and even “The Meaning of Life” with Dr. David Reiter.
Pre-professional externships in various fields and independent studies are also offered during January. Externships are designed to provide students with realistic, day-to-day experience of professions they hope to pursue.
The 4-1-4 calendar at Erskine College, inaugurated in 1970-71, provides for fall and spring semesters centered around the school’s liberal arts tradition and a winter term providing opportunities for innovative learning experiences on and off campus.
Erskine Theological Seminary began its January Term on Saturday, welcoming to the Due West campus 24 military chaplains enrolled in the MEDCOM Doctor of Ministry Program.
Spring classes begin Monday, Feb. 4, at Erskine College as well as at Erskine Seminary.
