Erskine’s fall semester begins

Members of this year’s freshman class joined transfer students and returning upperclassmen Monday, Aug. 21 for an unusual start to the fall semester at Erskine College. The day’s class schedule was altered to allow time to view the total eclipse of the sun in the afternoon.

Students, faculty, and staff members, along with visitors to the campus, gathered in Lesesne Auditorium at noon to hear a brief lecture on the solar eclipse by Associate Professor of Physics Dr. Ekaterina Michonova. Following the lecture, members of the Erskine community as well as visitors adjourned to observation sites set up on two campus fields.

Director of Admissions Bobby Duran said freshmen and transfer students this fall come from California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin as well as Puerto Rico, and represent eight foreign countries—Argentina, Belgium, Columbia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, and Spain.

Orientation activities included the Signing of the Tablecloth and the Signing of the Book as well as the Erskine Soiree, which was an outdoor event this year.

Erskine President Dr. Robert Gustafson will speak at the Formal Opening of Erskine College and Theological Seminary, set for 11 a.m. Aug. 31 at the Due West ARP Church.
