ACS marks National Chemistry Week

National Chemistry Week was Oct. 18-24, and the Erskine College student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) invited the entire campus to take part in their celebration.

The theme for National Chemistry Week was “Chemistry Colors Our World,” focusing on the chemistry of food colors and fireworks, rainbows, natural dyes and pigments, and more. ACS events on and off campus were related in some way to the chemistry of color.

Monday’s event was a balloon darts game on the mall, and on Tuesday, members of ACS went to a fifth-grade art class at Cherokee Trail Elementary School in Donalds to do “explosive paint art” involving Alka-Seltzer tablets.

Wednesday’s campus activity was the decoration of t-shirts “with the same explosive paint idea,” ACS President Clara Formby said.

On Friday, ACS hosted a homeschool chemistry lab for high school students across the state. “We do that once a month for homeschool students,” Formby said.

Freshman Peggy Skerratt assists with the homeschool lab.

Also on Friday, ACS students celebrated Mole Day with cupcakes. (More information on this unofficial holiday observed yearly among chemistry enthusiasts on Oct. 23 is here.)

Formby said eight ACS students will attend the Southeastern Regional Meeting of ACS in Memphis next month, with some making presentations.

Erskine’s ACS officers, in addition to Formby, are Autumn Horne, vice president; Arielle Houston, secretary; Kristin Richey, treasurer; and Kayla Squiggins, outreach coordinator.
