Silent Auction success caps Family Day fun

More than 500 people celebrated Family Day on the Erskine College campus Oct. 1, with students and their families joining faculty and staff members for the festivities.

The Silent Auction, hosted annually by the Parent Advisory Council (PAC) as part of Family Day activities, netted $4,000 this year, Director of Career Services Dusty New said. Monies raised in the Silent Auction will help furnish “wish list” items for student organizations.

New also announced the launch of an ongoing fund-raising effort sponsored by Erskine’s PAC, led by Co-Presidents Wilton and Sharon Brown of Anderson. Gift cards from nationwide restaurants and retailers will be available through ScripUnited, he said, with a percentage of the purchase price going toward funding student life at Erskine College. The ScripUnited site is www.scripzone.com and ErskinePAC is the group I.D. Interested alumni, family and friends may email Sharon Brown at wsbrown76@gmail.com  or phone her at 864-940-2609 for more information.

Bidding for the Silent Auction began early in the day, and the Choraleers and Chamber Singers, directed by Assistant Professor of Music Dr. Mark Nabholz, were the first of several groups of student musicians to perform on the porch of Watkins Student Center.

Later, two chamber music ensembles, followed by the Gospel Choir and then the Fleetones, a men’s a cappella ensemble, took the stage. After the Family Day cookout on the Erskine Mall, dance contests added to the day’s entertainment.

Family Day also offered families an opportunity to meet with faculty members and even to chat with Erskine President Dr. David Norman.

The day’s athletic events included a men’s tennis exhibition and clinic in the morning and a baseball intra-squad scrimmage in the afternoon.

The Parent Advisory Council and Erskine Student Services planned the Family Day celebration, with assistance from ARAMARK and a number of faculty and staff members.
