Driver Instructor Courses at Erskine College
Erskine offers the 40-hour instructors course that is required to open an automobile driver training school in the state of South Carolina. Erskine also offers the courses that are required for endorsement to teach drivers education in the public school in the state of South Carolina.
- If you are interested in opening a private driving school, PE 311 is required.
- If you are currently certified to teach in the state of South Carolina, and you are pursuing an endorsement to teach drivers education in the public school system, you are required to take all four courses: PE 311, 312, 313, and 314.

*PE 311 is the only course required for private driving school. This course will be offered multiple times throughout the year. You only need to select one of the three offerings to complete the course.
Cost Information
$1,125 per course for non-certified teachers
$1,065 per course for certified teachers in the state of South Carolina (teaching certificate number is required)

Course Descriptions
- Driver Education (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: Valid operator’s license. Designed to instruct potential teachers in the theory, techniques, and methods of teaching driver education, for endorsement as high school or commercial driver education instructors. Deals with driving techniques, traffic statistics, traffic engineering, etc.
- Methods and Materials in Traffic Safety (3 s.h.)
Prerequisite: PE 311 and teacher education endorsement. Advanced preparation for endorsement of high school driver education to meet the needs of traffic safety in school and community. Specialized research, information and techniques in traffic evaluation and new methods of teaching in Driver Education. Field studies in traffic management.
- Simulation and Driving Ranges (3 s.h.)
Prerequisites: 311 and teacher education endorsement. The techniques and methods of teaching, research, and new approaches in using the new Driving Simulator and Multiple-Car-Driving Ranges.
- Safety Education (3 s.h.)
An introductory course to present materials and methods of safety education for the typical school, home, traffic, and other major fields of safety. It is the purpose of the course to prepare teachers to organize and teach accident prevention and to provide teachers with comprehensive preparation in teaching aids and materials available for the enrichment of present courses. Can be used for teacher education endorsement.
Meet the Instructor
Robert Wiggins has served as a driver education teacher and coach at Clover High School for 15 years and as a teacher with Gaston Country Schools for 30 years. He holds a Master of Science in Education, Safety and Driver Education from North Carolina A&T State University and a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Wesleyan University. In 2015, Robert received a Driver Education Teacher of the Year award.
