Only 13% of all family-owned businesses are passed down to the third generation. Tobin became President of his family-owned company, Southeastern Freight Lines, Inc., in 2001.

Tobin first began working at Southeastern as a trailer shop mechanic in 1973 when he was thirteen years old, making $1.65/hour. He began working full-time in 1981 after graduating with a degree in economics from Washington & Lee University.

Tobin learned the business from the ground up by working in the shop, the warehouse, and serving as both a pickup and delivery driver and an over-the-road driver. He became a Christian through the influence of his boss and mentor during his late twenties.

Southeastern Freight Lines is a non-union, regional, less-than-truckload carrier operating 89 service centers located in 13 states and Puerto Rico. Southeastern has 8,600 employees and annual revenue of $1.7 billion. Since its founding in 1950, Southeastern has never had a layoff. The Cassels’ family purpose statement for owning and operating Southeastern is to “Impact Lives and Honor God.”
