William Moffatt Grier, president of Erskine College from 1871-1899, was widely known for his brilliant mind, innovative educational leadership, and his efforts at reconciliation in the aftermath of the Civil War. The Grier monument on the Erskine campus is reputed to be the first statue erected in honor of an educator in the South.

A noted historian, Dr. Joab Mauldin Lesesne was the first president of Erskine College and Seminary to hold a Ph.D. and the first president to have a majority-Ph.D. faculty. He served as president from 1954-1966.
