Originally from Alabama, Alan Pitts earned a B.A. in history from the University of Alabama and a master’s degree in history from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Pursuing a career in Information Technology, Pitts has worked as a Senior Systems Analyst in the commercial and institutional construction industry. In 2010, he moved to Arizona to become a business analyst, supporting construction companies across the United States and Canada. While in Arizona, Pitts worked for Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station and the State of Arizona, Department of Economic Security. He came to Erskine in 2023.

In addition to producing exhibits for the Erskine History and Heritage Gallery and other sites across campus, Pitts regularly teaches communications classes. He also serves as Erskine’s college archivist and supports McCain Library administration. In addition, Pitts is a student at Erskine Theological Seminary.

Research and Projects

Pitts’s historical projects focus on the antebellum South and the Civil War era, including society, markets, and wartime activities. He has done extensive research on Alabama during the Civil War and enjoys debating its causes and consequences. He has presented papers for the Alabama Historical Society and speaks regularly on historical topics.

Personal Interests

Pitts and his wife live in Due West. They love college football, movies, period dramas, ancestry, and quiet evenings with friends. They enjoy visiting family and friends in Alabama and maintain connections with Briarwood Presbyterian in Birmingham. Pitts was an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Phoenix, taught adult Bible studies, and served on the ordination committee of the Arizona Presbytery (PCA).
