Portrait Dedication
2:00 p.m. | Daniel·Moultrie Science Center
The late Dr. Jim Knight was an outstanding graduate of the class of 1965 and a beloved member of Erskine’s faculty and administration. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of North Carolina in 1968 and joined the Erskine chemistry faculty in 1969. From 1976 to 1988, he served as Vice President and Dean at Erskine. He is especially remembered for his passion for academic excellence and his positive impact on students.
In 1988, Knight was elected chancellor of Clinch Valley College in Wise, Va. (now the University of Virginia’s College at Wise), where he worked until 1992, then spent 16 years in administrative positions at the University of Virginia.
He was married for 55 years to Jeannie Dove Knight ’66, who served as mayor of Due West for several years. They were blessed with three children: David Aldon Knight ’90, Kevin Hunter Knight ’92, and Anna Knight Todd.
Knight passed away December 23, 2021. He was a true inspiration for excellence to his classmates and to countless students. During the 60th class reunion in 2025, the class of 1965 honored him by presenting a gift to the chemistry department in his name, to be used to further the academic pursuits of promising Erskine students who are interested in the sciences and particularly in chemistry.
