Buck Brown is the Director of Institutional Research. He grew up in Ruston, Louisiana, and began college as an Electrical Engineering major at Louisiana Tech University. He had many varying interests and opportunities to attend other institutions of higher learning when his family moved to Indiana. He attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Indiana State University, Mississippi State University, Columbia Theological Seminary (Decatur, Ga.), and Indiana University. He earned a B.S. in Math Education and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from Mississippi State University.  He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Indiana University in Instructional Systems Technology, a coordinated degree in Education and Business Administration.

His professional career began as a high school mathematics teacher and later as the College Ministry Associate for two Presbyterian churches in Starkville, Miss.  He began his professional doctoral work as a Research Assistant at Indiana University, in conjunction with the North Central Regional Education Laboratory (NCREL) in Chicago, Ill. This work focused on creatively using new instructional technologies to help math and science teachers better educate their students.

After completing his Ph.D. coursework at Indiana University, Brown submitted a proposal to the National Science Foundation to serve as Project Director/Principal Investigator for a four-year grant working with the Wabash Valley Educational Alliance (WVEA) in Terre Haute, Ind. As the PD/PI based at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, he directed the NSF grant known as Problem-Based Education (PROBE) for engineering, math, science, and technical education in the alliance, which included six regional institutions of higher learning and the Vigo County School Corporation. The goal was to help professors, instructors, and teachers become proficient in using constructivist educational theory to inform practical instructional practices in technical classrooms using advanced technology.

Prior to coming to Erskine College in 2011, Brown worked on starting a family business in Greenwood, S.C. Concurrently, he worked as an adjunct instructor at Piedmont Technical College and later as a visiting faculty member at Lander University. From 2003 to 2008, he worked in the Office of Assessment at the State Department of Education in Columbia, S.C. This work involved developing math assessments, including HSAP, EOCEP, and PASS, required of all students in South Carolina.
