Erskine College and Erskine Theological Seminary will mark the end of the 2012-13 academic year with commencement ceremonies Saturday, May 18.
College commencement is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. under the towers of the Erskine Building, and seminary commencement is at 3 p.m. in the Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
A baccalaureate service is set for Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m., also in the Due West ARP Church.
This year’s college commencement speaker is Alfred C. Sikes, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He chaired the FCC under President George H.W. Bush, where he led the transition to a wide range of new digital services. He served as head of the National Telecommunications Administration during the administration of President Ronald Reagan. In recent years, he has chaired the Trinity Forum Board and founded the Monty Alexander Jazz Festival in Easton, Maryland, where he lives with his wife Marty.
Gordon Stowe Query, former member of the Erskine Board of Trustees and an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, S.C., will receive the honorary doctor of humane letters degree during the college commencement ceremony.
The seminary commencement speaker this year is the Rev. Peter Frank van Dalen, executive director of World Witness, the Board of Foreign Missions of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. He served as a missionary in Pakistan as well as a trainer of missionary candidates and helped to establish Missionary Resources Connection of Columbia, S.C. He will also receive an honorary doctor of divinity degree.
Todd Erickson, executive director of student ministries at Second Presbyterian Church, Memphis, Tenn., will deliver the baccalaureate address. Erickson has spent 25 years in youth ministry. He serves on the board of New Hope Christian Academy, an urban college preparatory elementary school in Memphis, and is founder and director of The Edge Conference, a national conference designed for junior high students.
