Constitution Day convocation set for Sept. 17

us_constitution_01_smallErskine College will welcome SC Rep. James Smith Thursday, Sept. 17, as speaker for a Constitution Day convocation at 11 a.m. in Memorial Hall.

Grady Patterson Professor of Politics Dr. Ashley Woodiwiss said Smith, a recipient of the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, will offer his thoughts on the Constitution of the United States “in light of his career as a state legislator who was deployed to Afghanistan while in office.”

All institutions of higher education receiving federal funds must provide educational programming celebrating the history, meaning, and importance of the United States Constitution on or near Sept. 17, the day the Constitution was signed in Philadelphia in 1787.

There will be a question-and-answer session following Smith’s address.

Due West received significant snowfall on Saturday, January 31. Extremely low temperatures Saturday night and Sunday night will likely create icy conditions on surrounding roads. Because the safety of our students and staff is our top priority, classes have been canceled for Monday, and staff members should plan to work remotely. Moffatt Dining Hall remains open and is serving meals on a modified schedule. Classes and in-person work will resume on Tuesday.
