Senior chosen for Naval Research Enterprise internship

Erskine College senior Peggy Skerratt has been studying “novel activation methods of hagfish slime glands” in Florida during her 10-week experience in the Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP) at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD).
Peggy is a chemistry major, but the 26 NREIP students work on projects in various disciplines, including computer science, electrical and mechanical engineering, physics, and oceanography. “NREIP internships offer hands-on training in a real-world environment,” NSWC PCD Commanding Officer Capt. Aaron Peters, USN, said.
The paid internships are funded by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and individual government laboratories.
“Historically, many of these students graduate from their respective colleges or universities and come to work with us. The benefit to us is they already have an entry-level understanding about the command,” said Peters.
