AMS showcases student talents at Black History Month program

The Erskine College Association for Multicultural Students (AMS) presented “African American Heroes and Trailblazers—A Celebration of Black History” Feb. 25 in Memorial Hall.

Participants included many students who took the stage to offer readings, poetry, music, and dance. Longtime staff member Tobe Frierson, who serves as AMS sponsor, directed and accompanied the Erskine Gospel Choir.

Presenting biographical sketches of notable African Americans were Andrew Cannell, Marcus Hood, Nytorria Jeter, A.J. Mealing, L.J. Morgan, Tiffany Samuels, Kimberly Smalls, Dareisha Sowell, Naomi Stuger, and Alysha Tabb.

Performances of song, dance, and spoken word were given by Daniel Arnold, Dwight Bozeman, Cateya Davis, Megan Davis, Tobe Frierson, Kristin Giles, Andrew Legrand, and Dareisha Sowell.

Clara Formby, president of Baptist Campus Ministry, spoke about the origins of Black History Month; the Rev. Michael Turner, pastor of Springfield Baptist Church, opened the event with prayer; and Dean of Student Services Dr. Wendi Santee gave a closing prayer.
