Dance Marathon to host Children’s Miracle Network benefit

“Pop Art for the Kids!”

Dance Marathon, a recently chartered student organization on the Erskine College campus, is working to raise funds for children in the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

A “Party with a Purpose” is set for Saturday, Feb. 16, from 6 p.m. to midnight in Galloway Center Gym. Registration is $10, and all proceeds will go to the treatment of Children at Greenville Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Two events leading up to the “Party with a Purpose” have acquainted the campus community with Dance Marathon.

For the first event, “Pop Art for the Kids!” on Oct. 18, Dance Marathon members set up a giant wooden board on the Erskine Mall—with paint-filled balloons attached.

Erskine President Dr. David Norman prepares to throw a dart.

“Students, faculty, and members of the community were invited to come throw darts at the board, bursting the balloons and spraying paint,” sophomore Rachel Talbot said.

The free event netted “a bright, colorful banner for Erskine’s homecoming parade,” she said, as well as some publicity for the organization.

A little later in the semester, on Nov. 13, Dance Marathon hosted a ping pong tournament in Snapper’s, a snack bar and recreation area in Watkins Student Center.

Dance Marathon’s “Party with a Purpose” on Feb. 16 will offer an evening of music, dancing, entertainment, free food, games, and stories from families served by the Children’s Miracle Network.

Dr. Brad Christie shares a laugh with Dance Marathon members.

Erskine College Dance Marathon invites members of the surrounding community and the entire Erskine community to join in the night of celebration, Talbot said.

The 2012-13 Dance Marathon Executive Board includes Sam Abbott, Whitney Adkins, Chelsea Ball, April Bussey, Hannah Collins, Parker Edison, James Evans, Ronnie Funk, Kelley Griffin, Kate Macsay, Rachel Talbot, and Brad Thorne.
