Profile
Dr. Edward A. “Ed” Clavell serves as Provost of Erskine College, providing leadership for academic programs, faculty development, institutional effectiveness, assessment, and accreditation. Since joining Erskine in 2023, he has helped lead the college’s transition to a five-school academic structure, strengthened institutional assessment, and supported the alignment of academic programs with Erskine’s Christian mission.
Clavell holds a Doctor of Ministry in Biblical Theology and Leadership and a Master of Divinity in Leadership from Phoenix Seminary, as well as a Bachelor of Business Administration from Baruch College in New York City. His academic interests include organizational leadership, higher education administration, institutional assessment, entrepreneurial management, biblical literature, and theology.
Research and Projects
Clavell’s current work focuses on academic restructuring, shared governance, institutional effectiveness, accreditation, faculty development, and the creation of workforce-aligned academic programs. He is also involved in strengthening assessment practices, expanding graduate education, and developing new opportunities in nursing and allied health.
Professional Accomplishments
Before coming to Erskine, Clavell served Arizona Christian University in several leadership roles, including Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of Assessment, leader of the School of Business Administration, and Chair of the Business Administration Department. His work included developing graduate programs, expanding online education, implementing institutional assessment systems, and leading accreditation initiatives. He has also served as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission.
Clavell began his professional career as a metal craftsman and entrepreneur in New York City. After moving to Arizona, he continued in business as the owner-operator of Jessco Industries and production manager of Heritage Metalworks. He later entered ministry and higher education, serving as a children’s pastor, church planter, executive pastor, seminary administrator, professor, and organizational consultant.
Personal Interests
Clavell enjoys Bible teaching, woodworking, home-improvement projects, and spending time with his family. He and his wife Sandra have been married for 47 years and have two adult sons and two grandchildren.
