Grady Patterson Professor of Politics Dr. Ashley Woodwiss has received a 2013 Excellence in Teaching Award from South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU).

The award was announced at a ceremony April 16. A faculty member from each of the 20 member institutions of SCICU is nominated for the award, and recipients are honored at the award dinner. Each winner receives a professional development grant in the amount of $3,000.

“I am honored to receive this award,” Woodiwiss said. “Among the winners from other schools there were some very impressive individuals who have accomplished much professionally.”

He said he hopes to use the development grant “towards some professional development projects that will serve Erskine well.”

Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Brad Christie said the SCICU award for Woodiwiss was “a singular honor that is well deserved.”

SCICU’s website describes Excellence in Teaching honorees as “teachers who come to our liberal arts institutions to work one-on-one with students whom they also serve as advisors, mentors, and friends.”

A member of the Erskine College faculty since 2007, Woodwiss came to Due West from the Chicago area, where he taught at Wheaton College for many years.

He lives in Greenwood with his family.

The mission of SCICU is to support and promote the values of independent higher education in South Carolina. SCICU seeks to advance higher education through fund-raising, scholarships, research, and by facilitating collaborative activities among member institutions.
