Mission Statement
The mission of the Janice Hamilton Haldeman Arboretum at Erskine is to preserve the historic tree collection on Erskine’s campus in order to provide a locus for recreational and educational programs integrating science and the humanities, promoting scientific research, and beautifying the campus, while contributing to regional biodiversity and supporting environmental stewardship.

Dr. Jan Haldeman
Dr. Janice Hamilton Haldeman, for whom the arboretum is named, is Professor Emerita of Biology at Erskine College.
Haldeman joined the Erskine faculty in 1967 and continued in a full-time capacity until her retirement in 2002. She continues to teach courses at the college, investing in students and the natural beauty of campus.
Haldeman has enjoyed a long and successful academic career. She received the South Carolina Wildlife Federation Education Conservationist Award in 2012 and the Four-Year College & University Section Biology Teaching Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) in 2014.
In 2010, Haldeman was instrumental in establishing the Pressly Family Heritage Garden at Erskine and continues to lead the garden’s maintenance. She is known for her love for students and her vast knowledge of botany.
Haldeman holds a Ph.D. from Clemson University, an M.A. from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and a B.S. from Rollins College. She is married to Richard Haldeman, who served as Erskine’s public relations director from 1961 to 1995. Both are honorary alumni of Erskine College.
